cf148710cc Fix potential truncation of buffer lengths 
Saving a 32 bit unsigned int in an int might result in truncation
on some arches. Most likely the buffers weren't long
enough for this to be a problem in practice, but it's
still a bad thing to do.

f68d159e96 gcc 4.7 has a problem casting away const 
We need to ast to void * to drop const before SDL
does its cast. Though really the SDL cast should include
const for read operations.
